Hanging out at Mimi's

On Thursday and Friday Ellie and I wanted to spend as much time with the Brust cousins as possible. On Thursday Kelly came over while I finished getting ready and gave us a ride over to Mimi's. My main goal was to get some good pictures of Ellie for her birth announcement. I brought my basket which we didn't end up using for pictures but for naps. It worked out great. Mimi, Carly, Kelly, and the girls all helped with trying to get some good pictures of Ellie. I finally ordered the announcements so you'll see which ones we went with in the next week or so! BTW, Katelyn, I found a coupon for 20 free birth announcements of any price on shutterfly.com - it's THEBUMP20. So what I did is I just opened a second account, made the same card, and ended up with 40 free announcements (well, I did have to pay the ridiculously high shipping twice). But 40 for about $12 sure beats 40 for $90!
Nap time.
A typical 30 seconds in the life of Ellie:
On Friday we went to Grandma's house for lunch. Mom came and picked me up in Carly's van and it ended up deciding it wanted to spend time in Geigertown, since it refused to start even after Jon came home from work to try to jump it. So Mom and I just hopped into the good ol' LeSabre and arrived for the second shift of lunch. Lunch was delicious! Grandma made a soup that could have been served at a gourmet restaurant along with BLTs and applesauce. After lunch we headed to Mimi's and Carly, Kelly, Mimi, and some of the cousins swam. After a bit I took Ellie outside in the shade and I joined them at the pool. When the boys woke up from their naps, we headed off to a yardsale in Morgantown to try to find some goods.

We found out that we need to arrive early since the
Mennonites and Amish really swarm to yard sales! It's
dedication when you have to come in a wagon.
Ellie and I left the yard sale early since Ben and Jess were bringing dinner to us and spending some time getting to know Ellie. They brought over some delicious chicken chili and left behind all the leftovers. It was nice to catch up with them, too.

On Saturday Ellie and I stayed home and "helped" Jon work on the kitchen before the big event - Calla's surprise birthday.

At 4:30 we headed as a little family to Ellie's first birthday part - Calla's first fifth birthday celebration. We definitely surprised her, as she was actually at a loss for words when we shouted surprise! to her. Mimi had the evening packed full of gifts, dinner, games, and s'mores. Ellie is already expecting a great fifth birthday party!

We all had a lot of fun at Calla's party! Jon even let Ellie and I stay late while he went home to work on the dishwasher. Below is a picture of the new garbage disposal and dishwasher in place. Boy is it nice to have these! It was well worth the wait!

Ellie Meets Her Doctor and Starts Working

On Wednesday morning Mimi came over and watched Ellie while I showered and prepared to head out for Ellie's first doctor's appointment. While they waited, Mimi gave Ellie her first piano lesson:

heading to the doctor's office
ready for her checkup!
Our time at the doctor was fairly uneventful. Dr. Lavin says that she's looking great, which was good to hear. Here are the stats I remember:

Weight: 6 lbs (10th percentile)
Height: 19 1/2 inches (25th percentile)
Head circumference: 10th percentile (I forget what it measured...)

So we have a little peanut on our hands! When she left the hospital she was down to 5lb 13 oz, so it was good to see that she is gaining weight and nearing her birth weight. They say that babies should be back to their birth weight after a week or two. I really don't know how we'll know if she is, but we'll see her progress when we go for our next appointment on September 25th.
After our appointment Mimi took us back home and Ellie and I ate some lunch. Then I decided to dress her in a pink outfit and take a few photos for her birth announcement. Below is one you've probably already seen. She did great, looking very natural with her poses.

Jon came home and ate some lunch and we decided that today would be a good day to take Ellie into the office. A few of Jon's coworkers had requested Ellie come in sometime during the week or next to sit in a couple products to see how a "premie" baby would fit. Since I was already showered and Ellie was dressed and ready to go, we decided to make our appearance.
Well we made quite a stir at Iron Mountains! A handful of engineers were around as Jon moved her from her car seat to the first test object: a rocking basinet. After sitting in there for a bit Jon moved her to a new car seat they are creating that will work from newborn all the way to age 9 - or whenever they can finally get out of car seats. They have apparently been working on it for two years or so. Crazy! We were probably at IM for about thirty minutes. Mr. Saint made sure that Jon did not pressure me into coming (he asked me twice to make sure!). Well, let's just say it was well worth Ellie's time because Jon brought home her first pay check: $30! Time to opening a savings account for the stinker.

After our adventure at IM Ellie and I went home and called Mom-mom. She had asked when we wold be home so I told her we would be around all afternoon. She stopped by and told us a bit about Aunt Verna and Pops as babies. Dad was 2 weeks early and weighed even less than Ellie - under 6 lbs! Mommom was very flattering about Ellie saying she just might be the cutest baby she's ever seen - and she's seen a lot of babies! I can't help but agree. She also gave us a loaf of bread and some chicken noodle soup, which was very generous.
Mommom advised me to make sure to rest up and not push myself too hard, so Ellie and I took her advice and took a rest before Carly and her kids came to say hello. Carly brought their bikes and riding toys which allowed them to play outside a bit. Before going outside, Jay tried out the Leaf:
Carly and I sat in the sunroom while the girls rode their bikes and Jay sat at the end of the sidewalk, to afraid to go down the step to walk around. Carly and the kids headed out when our next guest came to see Ellie: Ginner Saint. While we were at IM Ginner asked if she could stop by after work and hold Ellie a spell since she was busy "working" during the afternoon. She gave Ellie some adorable pink onesies and socks, held her for a bit while Jon washed the car. Then we headed over to Mimi and Pop's for dinner.

Kelsey wanted Ellie to play with this toy. She's showing her how it's done.
It was fun to have dinner with the gang and spend more time with everyone. Jon and I went home relatively early since we never know what our nights will hold!

Below are some pictures of Ellie.
No more pictures, please!

Bringing Ellie Home

On Monday morning we were discharged from the hospital. We had such a great experience at St. Joe's - we'd recommend it to anyone!! (Just avoid Dr. Korey...) I had wanted Ellie to get her pictures taken at the hospital, but for some odd reason they didn't notice I had filled out the paperwork until we were basically ready to leave. At that point I didn't care anymore and told them that we had changed our minds.
Ellie enjoying her first car ride
We headed out around 11:30 toward Geigertown. I knew Mom would be there since she had asked what we wanted from the Deli for lunch (Turkey Twist!) and I thought Kelly and Clark would also probably be there. I was SHOCKED to see not only Grandma and Grandpa (ok, not shocking, really) but Carly and her kids! Jon said I cried more pulling into our house and seeing them than when Ellie was born (don't tell Ellie...). Oh my goodness I cannot believe they drove the whole way here without Jonathan to meet Ellie!

I was so excited to have everyone there! Calla and Kelsey watched closely as I nursed Ellie (I told them a few tricks that might help them when nursing their dolls) and then also when I changed her diaper. After we all spent some time catching up, Jon and I ate and mom told me to take a nap. I finally agreed to lay down for 20 minutes since I didn't want to miss any of the action! Almost 2 hours later I woke up  and everyone had eaten, played outside, and left! I had missed it all. But boy did it feel good to take a nap!
That afternoon we had flowers delivered to us, Ellie tried out the Leaf which was Jon's first project at work, and then got ready for our company. Doug and Donna brought us dinner which we ate with them, Grandma Mountz, and Omar: steak, baked potatoes, and fruit cobbler.

After dinner my family came back over and cut the welcome cake that they had brought for Baby Ellie's arrival which we hadn't eaten since I took too long of a nap. Jon said that it was a plant because they wanted a reason to come back. It worked! It was fun to see everyone again.
Monday night was a tough night for me and Ellie. Ellie was probably confused as to why I kept trying to feed and burp her, and I kept trying to feed and burp her because I couldn't figure out why she wasn't wanting to sleep! Jon had work the next morning and for whatever reason I felt a bit guilty asking for his assistance. At 4:00 he finally insisted that he take her and he left the bedroom, swaddled her up, sat with her in the family room for 45 minutes or so, then brought her back to her bed and she slept for a few hours. I couldn't believe it! Ellie woke up when Jon was getting ready for work and ate, then went back to sleep. I slept, too, and Mom came over and cleaned up the house a bit and made sure she was available to help so that I could get some rest. At around 10:00 I felt rested and came out and there was an apple breakfast cake warm on the counter ready for eating. Mom and I had some cake, tea, and orange juice while debriefing on the last 4 days' events. I was still trying to wrap my head around it all. Later in the afternoon Mom and Kelly switched places and Kelly watched Ellie while I showered. Later in the afternoon Carly and her kids came over and brought us some treats from Rita's, which I haven't had for weeks! Kelly went home to tend to Clark and Carly left shortly after since she was in charge of dinner in Elverson.
Kelly Culbert graciously brought a delicious dinner for Jon and me to enjoy. It was a mexican enchilada dish with rice, corn, and homemade apple sauce. She also made a wonderful peach crisp that I ended up eating almost in its entirety over the next 3 days (perks to Jon not having a big sweet tooth). I don't remember what else we may have done that night but Tuesday night Ellie slept great! She woke up three times and I feel as though I'm getting a handle on the whole nursing, burping, changing, and sleeping cycle.

The Hospital

Soon after Ellie was born a nurse told us that we had grandparents in the waiting room for whenever we were ready for company. They cleaned her off, cleaned me up, and handed her over to try to nurse. By this time I actually had spoken to Mom on the phone (she called almost immediately after Ellie was born - the doctor was still doing his work while we spoke...) and Jon had sent around pictures to family. By the time we were all cleaned up and Ellie had nursed, it was close to 8:30. Grandma and Grandpa, Peter and Brittany, and Kelsey Frisco and Cat Baskin were all ready to come see the little peanut. It was a lot of fun to share about my day and the shock of it all. I could not believe that I had a daughter and that she had come so early.

Grandma and Grandpa left after thirty minutes or so and soon after Doug and Donna showed up. They brought Chik Fil A for dinner for Jon and I since we had missed food court and room service hours. They also stopped and picked up some adorable outfits for little Ellie! After Peter and Brittany and the Baskin sisters left, Doug and Donna hung around until Kelly made it around 9:45. Kelly had been up in Connecticut this weekend and came straight to the hospital! When Kelly arrived Doug and Donna had a champagne toast in celebration of little Eleanor's arrival. Before heading out for the night, Doug prayed for our peanut.

In spite of traveling over four hours to come to the hospital, Kelly stayed until Mom and Dad arrived around 12:15. Driving from Covenant this morning, they initially had planned a leisurely route home including stopping for the night somewhere along the way. Since Ellie arrived when they were somewhere in Virginia (I believe), they continued driving to see her as soon as possible. They made the trip in record time, about 10 hours. It was so great to finally see them!

Mom, Dad, and Kelly stayed and just talked about everything that happened that day until close to 2AM. Then I fed Ellie and Jon, Ellie, and I all went to sleep. Ellie spent some time in the baby bed with the heat lamp with the nurses checking up on her periodically. St. Joe's doesn't have a nursery, but it didn't matter because with the nurses monitoring her heart and heat level, I only had to feed her when they brought her to me.

Sunday morning was a quiet and relaxed time where Jon and I could soak it all in. Katelyn called and caught up with what was missing between the texts and phone calls she received the day before. Mom came around lunch time and I took a shower. Jon left shortly after to go home and get some quality sleep and pick up a car seat for Ellie. We were getting a brand new state of the art car seat from Iron Mountains but Ellie just came earlier than we expected and we hadn't received it yet! So he just borrowed one from their stash in the basement. While Jon was away his parents and Grandma came to see Ellie. I wish I had some pictures - I'll try to post them later when I get some off mom's camera.

The Mountzes left and Aunt Kelly came to visit! Jon came back and asked how church went, since he had been in charge of a commissioning service which he had to hand off at the last minute. Before they left Mom told me that they wouldn't be coming in the next day since we were being discharged, but to keep them informed as to when we'd be arriving home. Sometime during the day we spoke with Corinne in Uganda who was getting her hair done. It was so wonderful to be able to talk to her and introduce her to Ellie.

Monday was uneventful. I showered and we went through all the paperwork that needed to be completed before discharge. Our experience at St. Joe's was wonderful - all the nurses were so caring and I felt as though Eleanor was in good hands. Although I had a terrible experience on the phone with the doctor who delivered, he did a good job working with me in person at the hospital.

I'll post more pictures when I get them from Mom or off of Jon's camera.

It's a Girl!!

When people asked me Friday night when our baby was due, I told them 3 weeks - but I predict that I will be a week or two late. Consequently, when I woke up at 1:15 Saturday morning with cramping, I did not think much of it. After waking up every two hours and until finally just waking up for the morning at 7:00, I thought perhaps I was experiencing false labor. I texted Mom and asked her what she thought: she confirmed my speculations but encouraged me to call my doctor. Around 9:30 I called my doctor's office who had the doctor on duty, Dr. Korey, call me from the hospital. He was not at all convinced I was in labor and quite rudely informed me how I'm not supposed to call until my contractions are 5-7 minutes apart and that I should just calm down. I was very upset with my interaction with him, and actually told him that I was not used to being spoken to that way. After getting off the phone with him, I proceeded to call my various sisters and get their advice on the situation. As the day progressed, my "cramps" seemed to be intensifying even though they were not necessarily growing closer together. At lunch time the contractions were about 2 hours apart still so I decided to go ahead and eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch. I spoke with mom about deciphering between Braxton Hicks and real labor, and she asked if I had experienced back pain yet.
Well my body must have heard her because my back began to hurt intensely shortly after she got off the phone. Jon was out mowing the lawn so I tried to relieve the pain by thinking of all the random positions I remember seeing in the birthing movies we had to watch...didn't help much. After Jon finished mowing the lawn he decided to stay close by and he was very helpful. He kept track of my contractions: when they happened and their length. As they grew closer together, Mom told me I really should call my doctor. I also had bright red blood in my discharge, which is also not usually a good sign. I was very hesitant to call since I had such a bad experience with the doctor on duty, whom I had never met, so Jon took initiative and called after I took a shower. At this point Jon was asking when I felt a contraction and I remember not being able to distinguish between pain and contractions, so on our contraction sheet he has times with "pain" next to them. He would ask: "Are you having a contraction?" And my response was a few times: "I don't know! PAIN!"
After my shower Jon had to finish packing (whoops!) and also practically dress me as I oddly did not feel the need to rush. After he finally convinced me to move off the bed and relocate to the car, I kept telling him that I thought he should drive slower. First of all, it was uncomfortable when he drove over bumps. But, more importantly, I did not want to arrive at the hospital to find out that I was not dilated enough to be admitted and be sent home. During the entire car ride my contractions remained about 5 minutes apart. My main thoughts on the way to the hospital: if this is not real labor, this is cruel.
We drove up to the main entrance and Jon opened my door. "Would you like me to get you a wheel chair or do you want to walk inside?" "I don't know!" Jon ran into the hospital, told the attendant at the desk why we were there, and came out to get me. He locked the car and walked inside, asking if he could park it later.
The maternity ward was all ready for me when I arrived. I decided I didn't want to embarrass myself when I found out I wasn't dilated, so I told them that I had a low pain tolerance - just in case nothing was happening. They wheeled me to room 12 where I put on the gown and laid on the bed. When the doctor came to check on me after a few minutes, I was 4-5 cm dilated and 100% effaced, the baby's head was down and my water was bulging. I recalled looking at the clock on the wall: it was 5:55.
"I want an epidural, just in case you don't know"I informed the nursing staff. So they tried administering my IV at two locations on my left arm before successfully jabbing me in my left. I remember three nurses working us but I spent the majority of my time lying on my side with my eyes closed. They asked some questions, which I answered when I could or just let Jon take over. Jon asked probably 4 or 5 times if he should go move his car. "No, you should probably stay here. If you get a ticket, just tell them to talk to us and we'll take care of it." That should have been my first indication.
I asked a few times about the epidural as time passed and a nurse told me all the equipment was in the hall waiting. They needed to get my blood results back and then the anesthesiologist would do her work. After asking another time or two, a nurse told me that we might not have time for one, and laughed briefly. "That's not funny!" was my immediate response. I remember someone telling me that I was 7 cm dilated. Soon after someone asked if I was ready to push. I told them I didn't know how that felt, but I felt like I was "gagging from the other end." Yes. That means I'm ready.
The doctor came, the bed came apart and the stirrups were set up. I could not believe I wasn't getting an epidural and they expected me to push this baby out! The doctor told me to let him know when I felt a contraction coming. I kept telling him that I didn't know what that felt like. Although I couldn't explain what it felt like, when it came I definitely knew! Jon sent Mom a text at 6:55 that I was getting ready to push.
Jon thinks it was probably about 5 contractions later, so probably 10 pushes or so, and out came our baby! While I was pushing, I remember saying how I couldn't believe I was having my baby without an epidural. I generally kept my eyes closed, too, during the process because every time I opened them I felt like the doctor was holding a 4 inch needle or some form of weapon. She was born at 7:14, hardly two and a half hours after I would have been considered in "active" labor. I still do not think I have recovered from the shock of not having time for an epidural.
